Event for Ambiga pelted with eggs and stones

Event for Ambiga pelted with eggs and stones
An angry mob pelted two DAP state assemblypersons and party supporters at a high tea event in Merlimau, Malacca today that was to feature Bersih 2.0 co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan.

NONEWhen contacted, Ayer Keroh state rep Khoo Poay Tiong (left) said the some hecklers had attacked him and Bandar Hilir rep Tey Kok Kiew while they were leaving the venue after the event.

“A stone hit me and the eggs hit our vehicles. One of our members’ windshield was also broken,” he said (top photo).
Tey's vehicle had one of its tyres punctured, a side mirror broken and its body badly dented by the hecklers (last photo below).
He has since lodged a report at Merlimau police station.
Earlier, Malaysiakini’s phone conversation with Khoo prior to the attack was cut off after incessant screaming was heard in the background.

"Anyone who wanted to come in had to use the kampung road, and police have advised people not to attend to event," he said.
The group clad in red T-shirts - some were the same ones worn by the crowd at last week's Umno 66th anniversary at Bukit Jalil stadium - heckled outside the event while it proceeded.

perkasa tibai umno red shirt in merlimau malacca ambiga event 1The intrusion took place despite Ambiga’s last-minute cancellation due to concerns that some parties may have intentions to "create chaos" at the event.

Khoo said they however decided to proceed with the event as some 300 participants had already turned up.

"Everything is okay inside (at the event), but it's a ruckus outside," Khoo told Malaysiakini during the event.

‘Utterly appalled at intimidation’

Yesterday, a number of pressure groups lodged a police report against Ambiga in an attempt to prevent her from setting foot in Merlimau for the event.

NONEIn a Bersih Youtube posting later, Ambiga (right) said she had wanted to attend the event but decided against it after being advised by organisers.
"I was still going to go but I had received news that there is every intention from some quarters to create chaos and to stop me from speaking in Merlimau.

"As a result the organisers, after consulting with the police have asked me not to come," she said.

Ambiga added that she was "utterly appalled" at the level to which certain parties had descended in attempting to prevent her from speaking.

However, she said that voters should take this incident as a lesson.

"Where ordinary citizens can be threatened and stopped from travelling within their own country and intimidated from giving speeches at the invitation of others," she said.

Heckling at Pakatan ceramahs have been a common sight in recent months as widely speculated early GE looms.

However, this is the first time an event has been disrupted specifically targeting Bersih.

Night market at Ambiga's residence today?

Night market at Ambiga's residence today?
    6:17PM May 16, 2012

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) officers were spotted near Ambiga Sreenevasan’s residence this afternoon, in anticipation of another protest.

NONETen DBKL personnel and five police personnel were spotted near her house at Bukit Damansara.

According to one DBKL personnel, they had received information that several individuals will be setting up a pasar malam (night market) in front of Ambiga’s house.

As of 7pm, no such activities were taking place.

Ambiga’s house has been the target of two protests against the Bersih 3.0 rally which she led.

NONEThe first occurred on May 10, involving a make-shift burger stall at her gate to symbolise the loses sustained by petty traders in Kuala Lumpur as a result of the Bersih 3.0 rally.

A second protest occurred yesterday, involving the Malaysia Army Veteran Association, who held a group exercise session, specifically targeting their posteriors.

Ex-army vets do 'butt exercises' at Ambiga's house
A group of retired armed forces personnel held ‘butt exercises’ in front of the residence of Bersih co-chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan in Bukit Damansara early this morning.

NONEThe participants, who claimed to be members of the Malay Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVTM), said the event was held to protest against Ambiga for being an “enemy of the nation who had smeared the country’s name”.

On May 10, a ‘burger protest’ was also held in front of Ambiga’s house by a group of traders who claimed to have suffered losses due to last month’s Bersih 3.0 rally.

Today’s ‘butt exercises’, which took place at 8.30am, is the second demonstration to be held in front of the Bersih co-chairperson’s house in a month.

NONE“We Armed Forces veterans have the right to protest against an ‘enemy’ who tried to smear the nation’s name,” said group president Mohd Ali Baharom.
Ambiga, who was at home, came out to receive a placard from the group.
On May 1, PVTM, with two other NGOs - Suara Anak Muda 1Malaysia and Kelab Mahasiswa 1Malaysia - made a police report at the Dang Wangi police station urging the government to take action on Ambiga and Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim for allegedly instigating the Bersih 3.0 rally.

When thugs have no fear of the police

When thugs have no fear of the police
    9:07AM Apr 20, 2012

YOURSAY ‘It is a pity that the police who were there did not stop the attack. It only shows that the police are afraid of thugs.'

Thugs attack students at Dataran Merdeka

Gerard Lourdesamy: This is a growing problem with Umno-BN sponsoring thugs and gangsters to do their dirty work. That is the big game plan of Umno-BN warlords - try to stir violence and make it into a racial incident.

The students should be praised and commended for their bravery and steadfastness. In light of the threats from DBKL (KL City Hall) and the violence last night, the students should stay put at Dataran Merdeka which belongs to the rakyat and not to the royalty, Umno-BN leaders and their cronies.

The people should come out in full force and support the students. We getting sick and tired of these forms of state-sponsored terrorism and acts of violence.

Moontime: The police did nothing to prevent the attack? If the attack is meant to invoke fear among the students, au contraire. Instead, it will just make them stronger in their resolve to uphold the cause.

The thugs are cowards, miscreants and a pathetic lot. The authorities should investigate whether or not they were being paid to do the job. There's no place for misguided vigilantes here in Malaysia.

Mohan Ghandi: Police inaction confirms that these are Umno thugs. Just reading Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein's statement confirms his defensive attitude. He knows, we know and Malaysia knows.

Don't Play-Play: The police had advised these delinquents not to continue with their camping in Dataran Merdeka. It is for their own safety.

But being stubborn and hardheaded, these juveniles chose not to listen and said that they can take care of themselves. So be it.

When there was commotion last night, the police thought that they were fighting among themselves. The police came to their rescue when these students finally came to their senses that they needed help.

Thank you, PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police), for going out of your way to help these ungrateful and stubborn juveniles.

Ferdtan: That was we feared most - Umno outsourcing mat rempit thugs to cause disturbances when the authorities cannot handle the situation legally.

It is a pity that the police who were there did not stop the attack. It only shows that the police are afraid of thugs.

Anonymous_3e21: Enter the Guinness World Book of Records for being the stupidest act of all act for attacking the very people who's only cause is to protect the children's of the attackers from being continually cheated by the regime.

Odev: These are hired thugs, similar to thugs hired to attack churches, to desecrate mosques by dumping pig's heads, to explode homemade bombs during DSAI's (Anwar Ibrahim's) Sodomy II verdict.

But the public at large are already matured politically. We are not going to over-react, but we do know where is our ultimate destination. Syabas mahasiswa.

Mushiro: The students protest is also symbolic of the many unhappiness that Malaysians have against the government.

For the police to just watch when the thugs attacked speaks volumes of the PDRM's attitude, bias, cowardice and blind support for Umno.

Umno has come to the level where they feel they can only win the elections through gangsterism. I commend the young students for their firm stand and their peaceful approach.

1Malaysia2Cina: This is just like the Arab Spring when the ruling regimes sent thugs to beat up the protestors.

I hope the BN government will come out strongly to stop this gangsterism and restore sanity. Meanwhile, to the brave students, "soldier on".

Dingy: Who are the people who are against students sit-in protest in Dataran Mederka? One may not agree with their objective, but it is a peaceful protest.

Why would thugs attack these students? What had the student done to them? The police were present during attack but didn't do anything until students begged them to do so.

Bender: This is typical Umno modus operandi. If you can't fight them with brain, resort to brawn.

That's what they've been doing for the past few months: sending thugs to disrupt Pakatan Rakyat ceramahs and use force to make a point (e.g. Lynas incident).

Only this time they've set a new standard, and a very lowly one at that - beating up helpless students who have done nothing but express themselves peacefully.

Obviously those paid thugs are morons whose intellect is as low as the money that they'll get for such act of gangsterism.

But the more remarkable is the kind of stupidity shown by the puppeteers who think that they can actually achieve something by resorting to this kind of foolish act.

No less pathetic is the attempt by some commenters in Malaysiakini (Umno cybertroopers obviously) to pin this on Anwar and Pakatan Rakyat.

Kairos: When a government employs thugs and gangsters to help them rule and intimidate, it has definitely overstayed its time in power.

Are the law enforcement officers of the country so inept that they need to step back and allow thugs to call the shots? Who are the real police?

When the difference between thugs and the police is removed and the two become one and the same, Malaysia is on the verge of anarchy.

As a loyal and faithful rakyat of this beloved country, I don't feel safe anymore.

Headhunter: One can't help but being angry not only because of the thuggery which was rather expected, but at the police for standing by and not doing their job.

Why are the police so docile these days? Aren't they paid to keep peace in the country or do they think they work only for Umno?

If the IGP (inspector-general of police) and his senior officers cannot do a good job, they should resign and join politics.

This Umno culture of violence and intimidation must be stopped and if the police cannot do it, we the rakyat have only one option and that is to kick the BN out before they turn all our youths into bigots, racists and thugs.

Jean Pierre: It's unfair to accuse the police of being biased when in fact they were neutral. The policemen, the flag pole and the rubbish strewn on the road were not doing anything.

Students defy quit order, staying on at Dataran

Students defy quit order, staying on at Dataran

Some 30 students who have dug in at Dataran Merdeka since yesterday, are determined to stand their ground despite being instructed to leave by a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) official.

NONETen DBKL officials and five policemen showed up in the late morning to confront the sit-in.

DBKL assistant enforcement official Zawaye Desan met the students at around noon today and instructed them to clear their things to make way for a royal concert tonight.

“Under the Dataran Merdeka by-laws, no-one is allowed to erect structures at the place without the consent of the mayor,” he told the students.

However, the students reached a consensus 10 minutes later to continue their sit-in until their demands are heard.

NONE“We won’t retreat. If you want to confiscate our things and chase us out, that’s up to you.

“We will still come back tonight,” said one of the student leaders, Adam Adli Abd Halim (left).

Upon the insistence of the police, the protesters dismantled four of their tents at around noon but have refused to budge further.

The students stayed on after the rally yesterday where some 500 university students marched through Kuala Lumpur from Masjid Jamek LRT station, through Jalan Raja Laut to Dataran Merdeka.

The protesters are demanding the abolition of the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN), a national scholarship scheme which they deemed exploitative.
DBKL flexes muscle

At 1pm, two DBKL officials moved in to ask the students to vacate the premises.

The order prompted PKR Youth strategic director Zaki Amani, who had just arrived at the scene, to come to the students’ defence, arguing that DBKL cannot use its by-laws to overrule the rights of assembly as enshrined in the constitution.

Student protest Dataran MerdekaThe students responded chanting loudly, "Students power," and, "Long live the students."

The standoff dragged on until 2pm, when Zawaye walked in to issue an ultimatum for the students to dismantle all structures in 15 minutes. He repeated the order at 2.15pm.

About half an hour later, DBKL officials forcibly began removing the tents, sparking loud chants from the students who remained steadfast inside their tents.

"We reject PTPTN, we want free education! Free, free, free to knowledge," they shouted.

PTPTN dataran sit in by studentsThey then put their tents back in place, prompting DBKL to extend them another hour to comply.

Meanwhile, PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub, who arrived at the scene at 3.15pm, told reporters that he will move an emergency motion tomorrow in Parliament to debate the matter.

"This is a request from the students. The government should respond to them," he said.

And as the most recent deadline from DBKL expired at 4pm, the student protesters have formed a human wall around their tents.

Force used

About an hour later, The authorities finally used force to break into the human wall to remove the tents.

A ruckus erupted, followed by pulling and pushing between the DBKL officials and the students, who shouted, "Don't push, don't push."

dataran sit in PTPTN.The officials managed to dismantle all the four remaining tents and confiscated one.

The students responded by delivering one of their damaged tents to the authorities.

"You want it so much, then take it!" they said, while continuing their sit-in.

Two students claimed they were assaulted by the DBKL men during the scuffle. They vowed to report the matter to the police tomorrow.

In a posting on the 'We Are All Safwan Anang' Facebook page, some students also complained that the authorities had broken two of their tents.

dataran sit in PTPTN.However, they were upbeat that passersby including tourists had stopped by their tents to listen to their grievances and vowed to soldier on.

"Will our campsite survive? We will fight on," read the posting.

Meanwhile, activist Fahmi Reza, whose grassroots assembly movement ‘Occupy Dataran' is in solidarity with the students, said they plan to hold discussions every night at the venue until they reach a resolution on the best alternative to replace the PTPTN.

By 5pm the students had marked 24 hours of resistance at the iconic square and the way things are going, their struggle does not look like it will conclude anytime soon.
